WILD DOG

wild dog has many names, including Cape hunting dog or painted dog. scientific names are Lycaon pictus, meaning “painted wolf,” referring to the animal’s irregular, mottled coat.

Features patches of red & black and sometimes brown, white, and yellow fur. Each animal has its unique coat pattern, and all have big, rounded ears.

Habitat

Wild dogs roam the open plains and sparse woodlands of Saharan Africa. Their largest populations can be found in Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. Wild dogs are among the many species that enjoy the creation of protected wildlife corridors. That help connects their fragmented habitats.

Pack behavior and hunting

Wild dogs are very social, and packs have to share food and
assist weak or ill members.

Most dogs prefer the wild wide variety of prey, including
gazelles.

They communicate by touch, actions, and vocalizations.

They can cover long distances at speeds up to 38 mph.

Threats to survival

They are also threatened by shrinking space to roam in their
home as well as their susceptibility to diseases like canine distemper and rabies.
