Free URL Slug Generator – Create SEO Friendly URLs Instantly

URL Slug Generator
Create clean and SEO-friendly URLs from any title.
Type a post title above, choose whether to force lowercase and remove stop words, and click Generate Slug. The tool turns the title into a clean, hyphen-separated URL slug you can paste into WordPress or any CMS. It runs in your browser.
What Is a URL Slug?
The slug is the readable part of a URL that identifies a specific page. In https://example.com/best-running-shoes/, the slug is best-running-shoes. A good slug tells people and search engines what the page is about before they click.
How to Use the Slug Generator
- Enter your post or page title, or click Example to see a sample.
- Keep Lowercase ticked so the slug is consistent.
- Tick Remove stop words to drop small words such as "a", "the" and "of" when they add nothing.
- Click Generate Slug, review the result and shorten it further if needed.
- Copy it into the slug or permalink field of your CMS before publishing.
Slug Best Practices
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Use hyphens between words | Underscores, spaces or %20 |
| Keep it short and descriptive | Copying a 15-word title in full |
| Use lowercase letters | Mixed case, which can create duplicate URLs on some servers |
| Include the main topic words | Dates or years you will need to change later |
| Use plain ASCII where possible | Special characters and emoji |
Google's own URL guidance recommends hyphens rather than underscores to separate words, and simple, readable URLs.

Changing a Slug on a Published Page
Choose the slug carefully before publishing, because changing it later creates a new URL. If you must change it:
- Add a permanent 301 redirect from the old URL to the new one. Rank Math, Yoast Premium and the Redirection plugin can do this.
- Update internal links so they point directly to the new URL instead of going through the redirect.
- Keep the redirect in place permanently.
- Avoid changing many slugs at once. Google has to recrawl and re-evaluate every changed URL, and rankings can drop temporarily.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I include the year in a slug?
Usually not. Put the year in the title if it matters, but keep the slug timeless so you can update the article next year without changing the URL.
Do stop words hurt SEO?
No. Removing them simply makes slugs shorter. Keep them when removing them changes the meaning, for example "how-to" in a tutorial slug.
How long should a slug be?
There is no fixed limit. Three to five meaningful words is usually enough to describe the page.
